Didactic use of GIS and Street View for Tourism Degree students: understanding commercial gentrification in large urban destinations

Tourism gentrification, as a complex phenomenon in large urban destinations, is an important topic for future tourism professionals. The aim of this paper to offer digital cartography making activity based on the contemporary dynamics commercial transformation within gentrification contexts Madrid order facilitate its understanding. This innovative teaching accordance with sustainable pedagogy approach and follows active methodology using three different GIS applications: Google Street View, ESRI ArcGIS Desktop Online Story Maps application. A 4-phase methodological design proposed so that customizable (1- recognition previous ideas), achievable (2- significant streets’ mapping), collaborative (3- collective idea-sharing) replicable (4- academic didactic evaluation). Finally, results from initial implementation are brought light: i) conceptual lack was found, ii) examples help see proposal materialized shown iii) expected positive consequences according scientific literature presented. It concluded that, despite scarce bibliography, use software View higher education convenient, not only learning territorial phenomena but also learn tools highly valued professional field.
